Am I reading all of these guides correctly that all it takes to stop 16 thousand soldiers is one guy?? I am reading that people place one worker, one warrior, one swordsman, one pikeman, etc. in front of their zerg of archers and somehow ever last man charging across the plains, thousands upon thousands as far as the horizon stretches in both directions, screaming their nation's warcry stops, dead in their tracks, to deal with these solitary individuals... one at a time! Meanwhile they are getting riddled with arrows while the entire teaming mass of 15,999 bloodthirsty killers twiddles his thumbs waiting for one chap to lop the head off Bob the Worker.

    15,999 Soldiers: "Done?"
    Other Soldier: "Yep, he's dead."
15,999 Soldiers: "Right, moving on then."

Who in the world developed this combat system? Please for the love of every 'good' strategy game ever made tell me that I have this all wrong and that is not how this potentially wonderful world works.
The world is actually operating that way. Correctly if I am wrong but the Visigoth used captured Romance as their meat shield when they battle with Rome. The Romance can't shoot arrows at their own people and consequently allow the Gothic to advance.

"Gothic" is a modern term for a particular social group
"Goths" is also a historical term for two of the germanic tribes that destroyed Rome: the Ostrogoths and Visigoths.

"Romance" has nothing to do with the "Romans".
    Use the correct terms.

Yes but they also smoke up your house and wear out your Cure and Smiths albums.
