I've never really understood the use of perfume in the past 150 years.

Originally perfume was developed to cover the scent of unwashed bodies in the days when Bathing on a regular basis was considered either sacriligious ( because those who truly believed in God supposedly carried the "Stink of Piety") or unhealthy ( which for quite a long time it actually was, as bathing was done in unheated water which evaporates very slowly, and when done in winter could lower the body tempurature to dangerous levels).

I don't mind the smell of a good underarm anti-perspirant. But when I give a woman a hug I want to smell woman, not flowers or musk.

Perfumes interfere with the natural Pheromones that every human being emits. Pheromones are there for a reason. They convey a persons innermost feelings on a very direct level. Think about any really good book you've read. If the author is truly any good they will mention things like "the Stink of Fear".
