Very common tactic. The same happens all over the Web. Look at Linden Lab's figures about Second Life as a fantastic example of that. Once your account is created it will exist forever unless you personally choose to tell them to delete it. Even if you stay logged in for five minutes and quit in frustration, never to log in again, you're still counted as a registered user to make them look good to other corporate interests.
