Sorry to say this, but this one thing makes this game a joke.
People should not be able to build them endlessly and they should not last more than a day.
Needs to be fixed to make the game better.

Hmmm... Why?
Yeah npc raiding is aparently the only real way to maintain a healthy army.
yeah lets all not npc farm, have towns with 100k archers and 18k AT per town. Then we can never attack each other since we don't have enough troops to actually win, and can't feed extras because food prices would be even worse than lumber.
Not to mention no one could afford food anyway since their npc gold is now gone.
BE THANKFUL big players farm NPC towns. That means they are ignoring your small towns, because you aren't worth their time. Those few attacks they send are not attention, so don't start.
If npc farming were removed/changed that they give less resources and/or can't be attacked without casualties (1-5) that would be good for the economy, but they would need to make armies consume less food. It would take a rather significant re-balancing of the game to do it without causing more problems than it fixes, but as it is now it pretty much takes all the management challenge away which sucks.
That doesn't make sense, you can't simultaneously argue that
1. Higher lv players will farm lower level players instead of npc towns
2. No one will fight because no one can produce an army big enough to beat a defending army/ATs.
#2 is closer to accurate, as anyone who knows what they're doing can have plenty of ATs by the time they come out of BP, and ATs are far cheaper to build than the amount of units it takes to knock them down, so unless those low hanging fruit are people who don't know how to play at all or have quit the game in which case they will probably be farmed and killed anyway, it would be harder, not easier, to kill people fresh out of BP (who don't usually get to farm NPC towns until at least a few days in anyway).
It's also fail to troll and threaten anyone who disagrees on a subject, though the OP provided no logical argument for the removal of NPC farming either, so both sides of the argument have been weak sauce thus far.
As I said, though, removing/changing NPCs would require a significant rebalancing of the game or else it would cause more problems than it fixes. Maybe if there were more of them to start with, but players couldn't create them, that way they would be strategic resources for people to fight over, as opposed to everyone and their pet hamster having 20 npcs per city to themselves.
In truth the game would be better overall and people would have to battle each other to actually gain.
Instead of farming npc and building massive armies without really doing anything to earn it.
tell me then, How do you plunder a player town with 150k archers plus a few k in rainbow fodder and maxed out level 9 (i'm going to be nice) walls, WITHOUT NPC farming given the current mechanics.
This town is pretty easy to sustain without farming barbs constantly. One level 5 a day would feed it if the city screen is focused on farms/good poli hero/good agri tech.
I'll even be really nice. You can attack 4 lvl 5 barbarian towns a day.
How do you win without crippling your entire alliance?
Another benefit to building NPC farms is to build them in every open space around you.
Not only does this give more food for you and the ppl around you but it prevents other players from creating a new outpost nearby to attack you from.
It's nubs like this that whine about NPC farming that get on my nerves.
The only reason you are allowed to survive and build is because there are better places to get resources (NPCs and inactives). If NPC farming was taken away, players would immediately look for alternate places to gain resources. Suddenly the low-hanging fruit are eight-day old players instead of NPCs. Try to imagine what happens then.
