I've had two very different experiences with this game in the last month.
First I started playing server 1 back when it was the only server around. I spent a week first building up a city, and then starting a second city as it shows you to do in the routine quest. By the time I left player protection, I thought things were going well and went to sleep. Next morning, not even 12 hours after I left beginner protection, I got on to only to find that my main city had been conquered by someone attacking repeatedly during the night with armies three times the size of my city population, 27,000 troops. I was left with the second city I made, which was low in resources, not nearly as developed, and probably would've just been plundered repeatedly anyways.
Obviously my time on server 1 was over. I considered quitting the game completely, because of course I was upset that I'd basically wasted a week's worth of gameplay just to be killed off like that. I really liked the game itself though and gave it another shot on another server.
So far things have been much better. Within a day or two of joining the new server, one of my neighbors invited me to the alliance he's in and I'm having a great time there. I haven't been attacked at all by my neighbors and I don't attack any active neighbor unless they're not active anymore (so far it's just been a few newbies that'd quit already), even though I could easily farm several of my active neighbors. I don't do it cause I know what it's like to be on the receiving end of it.
Overall, I really like the game but I haven't recommended it to anybody because the gameplay experience varies so much depending on the people you end up next to. There are some people that are friendly and helpful to newbies, and others that see newbies as a resource farm for them in seven days. It seems to me that most of your gameplay experience depends on who you happen to be placed near. I can understand why there's so many complaints on this from people that weren't as lucky as me the second time around.
