My hometown is tiny and sleepy, but we've had some real kickers happen here.
A marine stationed, I think, in North Carolina, was accused of murdering his wife after she went missing following some serious domestic violence issues on the base he was at. Where I live was his hometown, and we have a whole lot of abandoned mine shafts hereabouts. The police had good reason to think he drove here and dumped the body, and a few years back the place was crawling with search parties, cadaver dogs, and helicopters, but they never found her.

About 5 years ago, two women (a middle-aged woman and her mother) who lived in a house about 1/2 a mile from me were found butchered in their home. The door had been forced open, and the place was a MESS. Nobody was ever arrested or charged, but most of the town thinks one particular drug-addict was responsible. He was "encouraged" to move and did so.

Two years ago, a mentally-challenged teenage boy wanted to show his father's handgun to a high school girl who lives a block away from me (and he lives about 3 houses away from me.) He "showed" her the gun by forcing his way into her kitchen after she told him to get lost and had closed the door in his face, and then he fired the gun at her. He missed, put a dandy hole in the wall of her house, scared half the neighborhood, was arrested, and got a relatively light sentence with some heavy supervision imposed on him.

And last year, about 10 minutes away from me, some high school kids beat and kicked an illegal Mexican immigrant to death out on the street in front of half a town full of witnesses, who all knew the kids, and ended up convicted only of simple assault charges. We still have various activism groups doing protests here now and then as a result, and the FBI is investigating that town's police department for their role in the whole thing.

The really amazing thing though, is that with the exception of these incidents, this area is VERY low crime. We don't lock our doors, there are NO rapes/burglaries/car thefts/armed robberies/etc. Read the police blotter and you'll see a few DUI's and some people in court for writing bad checks. Strange dichotomy.
