ok so heres a "basic" guide for all things archery

-ballista(attk-450)
ballistae are good for attacking NPCs but not other players by them selves
for further info on ballista verses NPCs refer to my other thread
http://bbs.evony.com/showthread.php?t=47386 another thing that they are useful agianst archer towers i think it takes 1 ballista to take out 10 archer towers.

-archers(attk-120)
archers are in fact one the most important part of an army.
the archers needed to take out 1 archer tower is 5 archers.
archers are usually sent in waves for me the go after
the warriors have gone on the first wave. This
is done so that the archers don't have to worry
about traps and other things.

-archer towers
towers are a important part of your cities defense and can save you from
being plundered. the only bad part is that they can be destroyed by catapults(witch you gotta use trebuchet) wich isnt always a problem cause not alot of people have them but you need to be aware of this.

-catapult(attk-600)
catapult are hard to get but its worth it believe me! they are effective against archer towers and that's always a good thing.
but yes having catapults give you a great advantage.
