Can I just say, if this is actually going to lead to developments in-game, can you please employ some professional historians. Please PLEASE don't just assume that what people have posted here is necessarily fact. . .

Google and wikipedia do not always give the correct answer. I hope it's not asking too much for any future data and changes to be actually historically correct. . .?

No disrespect, but that goes for the OP as well. Assumptions have been made for the countries in the poll that are not necessarily correct, as some have pointed out.

Default Holy Roman Empire: Poll Choice

I voted for the Holy Roman Empire: 962-1806; from its foundation by Otto I 'the Great' to its abjuration through the abdication of Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor, Emperor of Austria, King of Bohemia and King of Hungary. There are two divergent viewpoints: that Charlemagne was the first Holy Roman Emperor, and that Otto I 'the Great' was the first Holy Roman Emperor. I agree with the second choice/viewpoint; the Carolingian Frankish Empire lasted from 481-814 CE. Charlemagne was of the Carolingian Dynasty that had replaced the Merovingian Dynasty. Through a great path of subjugation, Lombardy, Bavaria, Burgundy, Pampalona, Friesland, Saxony and Spoleto were added to the direct territorial acquisitions. The peripheral territories/margraviates consisted of the tributary Slavic lands, Brittany and the Lombard Duchy of Benevento. (The Byzantine Catapanate of Italy held Calabria, and the Duchy of Naples was under the hegemony of the Byzantines.)

Charlemagne upheld the autonomasia of "Rex Francorum" or King of the Franks, "Rex Langobardorum" or King of the Lombards and "Imperator Romanorum" or Emperor of the Romans. His son ascended to the imperial porphyrogene: Louis I 'the Pious'. After the treaty of Verdun: 843 CE the Carolingian Empire became a tripartite entity: Western Francia to Charles, Middle Francia and Italy to Lothair and Eastern Francia to Louis 'the German'.

Western Francia lost the Carolingian Dynasty with the ascension of Hugh Capet, of the Direct Capetian Dynasty. (1300's followed by the Valois, 1500's followed by the Bourbon Dynasty, 1830-1848 the Bourbon-Orleans Dynasty); Middle Francia led to the arising of Friesland, the duchy of Burgundy and a divided Italy; and Eastern Francia with Otto I 'the Great' led to the foundation of the Romano-Germanic political entity: the Holy Roman Empire. Conrad II 'the Salian' of the Salian Dynasty, following the Ottonian/Liudolfing Dynasty would incorporate the duchy of Burgundy to the Holy Roman Empire.

In addition, the Holy Roman Empire was at its peak of centralization during the reigns of Otto I, Otto II and Otto III of the Liudolfing Dynasty; after the loss of the first dynasty, the fragmentation began. The appellation of "Holy Roman Emperor" was decided by the initially seven Prince-Electors (Bavaria and Hannover would later be added as Electorates of the Holy Roman Empire) The Prince-Electors would choose the Emperor; the designated heir before the coronation by the pope would be titled "Rex Romanorum" or King of the Romans and after his coronation be titled "Rex Teutonicorum" or King of the Germans. (NOTE: Charles V was the last Holy Roman Emperor to be coronated by the pope; later Emperors would be titled Emperor-Elects.)

This has been a brief overview of the Holy Roman Empire and an indication of a historical passion.

Tell that to the people who founded your country

It's actually the Great British Empire. Not England but whatever!

You do ralize that now it was Great Britan, or the British Empire, but not both, and at the time it was the Kingdome of England, but my two cents, in hte middle ages it was all France all the time.

Reading all this was a good laugh. It is sad though, that most of you don't even know the timeframe for the middle ages.

Even the Wikipedia is lightyears ahead of most posts in this tread. And it is impossible to insult someone who is as clueless about a topic as the author of this pool is.

Spain: There was no Spain in middle ages. Only the christian kingdoms of Iberia.
Egypt: Again, no kingdom of that name existed. The teritory was part of different "kingdoms" throughout the time period.
England: First correct one. I just hope we stick to the middle agel kingdom of England
France: Another one that did exist. And again France and medieval France are two different things.
The Crusades: Close, but The Crusader States would be the correct term.
    Byzantine Empire: Certainly.
Islamic countries: After Egipt, now we are even more ambiguous.
Holy Roman Empire: Correct. It did survive after the middle ages, so again, be careful.
Kingdom of the Two Sicilies: Another kingdom that only existed after middle ages. There was a Norman kingdom of Sicily, a Hohenstaufen kingdom of Sicily and an Angevin kingdom of Naples during middle ages.
Others: Can't get wrong with others.

I don't consider myself learned in History, but compared to the rubbish found in this tread...

Well, we have to keep in mind that many of the posters are around fourteen, so I guess they would not have a understanding of history yet, but I agree it would be nice if the original post contained correct information

I have literally just finished studying this in my first year history degree. Regardless of how old people are, many have clearly just googled one of the names and cited whatever they have found to make it appear that they know something.

If any changes are made in game with a similar thought process I don't think I shall be playing - Not because incorrect history offends me by any means, I just think that more effort should be put into making the game factually correct - which is really not that difficult to do.

    Here's hoping.
