Oh well. I retract my previous post.

    In response to Zamte

On the defensive side, why can't archers stand atop the walls, and fire down on the attackers. It makes a lot of sense - which might be why castles were designed that way in real life.

I have just received a notice that an army is approaching. Since I couldn't remember how to open the gates to fight I began frantically researching. It appears that I CAN open the gates to fight the coming army for just one of my cities while the gates on the others remain closed.

(5)lastly, some believe if gate's open your army will defend ALONGSIDE the wall defences but casulty's will come from the army and traps (or some sort of complicated mix).

i count 5 different theory's here, i've never attacked or been attacked since i'm still under protection, but i'd love to get a clear and concise answer to this one please lol. please select theory 1 or 2 for closed gates, and 3,4, or 5 for open gates.
    Option 1 is True.
    Option 2 is False.
Pretty sure from my "research" that option 3&4 are false, and option 5 is true.

    Can anyone confirm this?

walls are worthless and so are defneses. It is a waste of resources. The people who have been playing since the begining have massive armies that will destroy ANY wall defense you can build. yhou can max out a level 10 wall and when 200k troops come knocking they dont last but a few seconds

    My question,
So really, if your army is stronger than your fortifications leave the gates open, if your fortifications are stronger than your army leave gates closed?
[edit] though if option 5 is true why wouldnt you leave the gates open all the time?

    Cheers

You should always leave your gates open and embassy open. Otherwise if your allies reinforce you they won't fight until your city is burning and the food is all plundered, starving out your reinforcements and earning you an expel from mine for being so silly.

Mongol General: Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
Mongol General: That is good! That is good.

Perhaps durability of walls is relative to the time it takes for the enemy to get through them, i.e., the higher their level then maybe the longer it takes for the enemy to destroy the walls, which would buy the defender more time ... right or wrong?

Bigger walls to me mostly provide more spaces for defenses. The durability issue isn't really a big thing because it would take a really tiny army to fail to get through in 100 rounds which they must do or they automatically lose.
Outside the 100 rounds the defenders have as much time as they need till they all are dead and then the attackers plunder away.

With or without a second city once you pass your 7 day protection your first city can be attacked. It can be pillaged over and over until it is basically not recoverable due to all your citizens leaving and no resources coming in. The attackers can not conquer it and take it for their own though. They can conquer and take any of your other cities though.

I've never left my gate open though. My wall defenses are better then my pitiful army and if someone it going to get through them they'll destroy my meager army. I just try and not look like a juicy target and hope nobody comes down with 100k soliders or something.

OK, thanks all for clarifications. One really noob question - so how do you identify an enemy's first city from his subsequent cities?? ... so that you at least know those you can and can't conquer?
I can resist everything, except temptation
