then they are big targets if the sleep with there gates closed lol imagine walking through their city taking the food and other resources away! by the time they get on there army may be dead and riots may ahve broken out everywhere! defenses are not useless.

Its not that you can't take his first city, its that you cannot capture his last remaining city. Therefore if you want to know about a player, just look him/her up on the statistics table and see how many cities they have left, if its more than 1 you can capture.

That's precisly my question? (Q5), Why would anyone include an option to close gates if it only means less defences. And further more why would the walls not matter? Every medieval castle had walls and the attackers had to go thru them to get inside. This game seem to be build on some wierd premise.

Well out of my humble experience (3weeks) I have been attacked once. My wall defences were destroyed - all of them and my army was halved with the gates closed. In the post mortum however, my army apparently did not take part. So they just sat in the barracks and got themself sloughtered? Why?

(2)others believe if gates are closed, attacking army will fight fortifications, THEN fight your army,

(3)still others believe open gates will cause your army to fight but since the gates are open will allow the army to march past the wall defences......

(4)and other's think open gates means the attacking army has to go through your army to get to the city wall defences......

(5)lastly, some believe if gate's open your army will defend ALONGSIDE the wall defences but casulty's will come from the army and traps (or some sort of complicated mix).

From what i have noticed in the alliance war reports i would say that (5) is the more accurate i personaly open the gates when the army that is attacking me is big enought to beat my defences this way i lose more troops and keeps more fortifications as troops build alot quicker .

So if I'm going to be smashed, it's best to open the gates?

Gates Closed = Towers Abis, Traps, Logs, Trebs are the only thing involved in battle. (No ranged troops will help in this fight)
Gates Open = All wall fortification plus troops will battle at your gates. Meaning if your wall fortification is not strong enough you will lose some or all of your troops.

Theres no secrets behind defence other than your choice of how you choose to defend.

Personally, if I see an attack comming and im sure ill win, I will open gates to aid in reducing casualties. If I would possibly lose I keep gates closed to prevent losing troops also.

Since when did wall's stop increasing your archers range?

To those of you who claim level 10 walls are useless, have you considerd the fact that walls now increse AT's range? Level 10 walls, alongside with lvl 10 archery, doubles your archer towers range. And the same benifits apply to your ranged units in your army if the gates are open (I belive). The game play has changed from what i understand, as even some of the biggiest, strongest players, have a hard time takeing others cities. 18k archer towers with this bonus are nothing to be trifled with, especially when the enemy has 30k archers in his city. *Please note that not even catapaults are out of at's range now with level 10 walls and 10 archery. If my memory serves correctly, even just level 10 walls and 5 archery out ranges a catapault.

Also, for the beginners who wonder how you would feed, 30k archers constantly, if you have your city set up right, there is no trouble with doing it.
