The only "other tactic that might be more sucessful" is to kick around players so much weaker than you that they have no chance of defending themselves no matter what they do.

Keep playing, maybe you'll learn about it sooner or later -- except, wait, now you wont learn sooner or later because you'll get nothing but blank reports back once you finaly work up the cojones to attack strong enough and sharp enough to defend themselves against more than one or two waves of your bullying without folding.

With no feedback to work from, you will have no idea what went wrong with your waves or what you might do to improve your tactics.

Did you set things up wrong? or was your opponent online and did he do something unexpected that threw a wrench in your attack pattern? like medic? or use his gates strategicly? or march and return his troops? or drop a trap into your third or fifth wave, pushing it out to 5k range? or stagger and dribble his troop production to keep some of his layers continualy refreshed even though you hit him 5-10 times inside a single second?

Do you have any idea what kind of affects these tactics have, or why they might cost you hundreds of thousands of additional losses at very little cost to the defender??

You will have no way of knowing what went wrong, even if you sucessfully manage to land scouts between each and every attack wave.

Then... dunno, maybe you'll just give up on trying to hit towns with more than 250k archers and can go back to making twelve year olds cry, congratulating yourself all the while on what a skilled and clever tactician you are for doing so...

Lol Zappo, you sure nailed the point well.
