The name "Kira" actually is derived from the japanes word (キラ which means "Killer".

The reason that Light Yagami, is publicly known as Kira, is because of the method that he kills people through. The nickname however, is NOT the name that Light really wanted to be known as however, as he wants his identity to remain a secret, he doesn't fight it, and so arises as an entity known as Kira.

Light, is an intelligent, albeit misguided youth that suffers from a philosophical dilemma. Light is one day sitting at school when a he finds a book on the ground, the book is titled "Death Note". Upon opening the book, he finds that if he writes the true name of a person in the book, while thinking of there face, that person will die of a heart attack in 40 seconds, there are also several other rules that are attached to the notebook, however you will simply have to watch or read the anime to learn about them. Once Light verifies the power of the Death Note, he decides that he should use its power to "punish" or in this case kill criminals that seem to be getting away with crimes in Japan.

After Kira or Light, begin there rise to fame, the global detective "L" arrives on scene, and begins to search for Kira. Throughout the story line, the two of them continuosly battle each other on the mental plane, neither of them seeming to be able to gain ground.

I will not spoil the rest of the story here, however if you want to know how everything ends, then PM me and I will tell you what happens.
