Thread: The Best Tax Rate is 50% - PROOF

    Now there's something I don't understand, when you guys say 50% is the best, do you mean the most effective at making money with exclusion of all else in the game? Or is it somehow the most optimal way to play the Evony?

    With 50% tax you get a stable 50% of max population, and that gives you maximum income when you're not online to use disaster relief. It's a max of a function.
    Right now I'd say 0% tax is best though, to minimize cottages needed for more barracks and maximize population you can train into troops all the time
    Whenever I log on I have population at max to train max troops, gold is easy to get anywas

    depends

    5% (or what ever % to pay for Hero, the break even rate)
    25%~30%
    50%

    ...these are the K.I.S.S. tax rates while running several (5+) cities and concentrating on plundering.

    5% slows conquest

    25% balances gold and keep up loyalty for "defense."

    50% SIMPLE rate for wanting gold, now, with minimal maintence.

    There are really 3 strategies. 0-5%, for people who are very warlike, make money through raids, and don't want to be conquered. 50%, for people who aren't constantly active and like stability. 0-100% switcheroo, for those who are slightly obsessive and want to max out production.

    Population = [1 - (0.01 x Tax Rate)] x Max Population
    Tax Income = (0.01 x Tax Rate) x Population

    so Tax Income = (0.01 x Tax Rate) x [1 - (0.01 x Tax Rate)] x Max Population

    It's simplifying time!

    TI = (0.01 x Tax Rate) x [1 - (0.01 x Tax Rate)] x Max Population

    TI = (MP / 100)TR x (1 - 0.01TR)

    TI = (MP / 100)TR - (MP / 10,000)TR^2

    Tax Income = (Max Pop / 100) x Tax Rate - (Max Pop / 10,000) x Tax Rate^2

    If you plug in any max population, it always comes out with a tax rate of 50 being the best.

    You could also graph it as a parabola, with TI= -(MP / 10,000)TR^2 + (MP / 100)TR

    Here's the graph for a max population of 10000.

    I think that that proves it pretty conclusively.
    that is awesome plot of a function now if only population [rate of change] could set to be 1st derivitive of the parabolic relationship
    we would have different velocities of change based on where our population was
    in relation to where its headed

    I don't see any ? marks, are you talking about ^, if so, then math is not for you

    The math is all correct, and results in a stable optimum rate of 50%.BUTyou also have to consider the prospect of being plundered by someone who wants to conquer you. A loyalty of 50 is not enough, in my lowly opinion to adequately protect your city from a conquerer. thus tax rate is ultimately a judgement call. The only thing that is certain from this is that say a 40% tax rate is better than 60% for this very reason. So the onlytime it should be over 50% is if you are farming as described above.

    Actually, for some reason the forum displays division signs as a question mark, but I edited it later to make them slashes instead.

    I believe that it is slightly more complicated than this is suggesting. I made an excel sheet to show the optimal tax rate, and it is 50%, but when real numbers were put in the actual gold from tax was higher than anticipated. I believe that there is some way upgrades are factored into the tax collection rate. Whether this produces a different maximum efficiency I don't know, I just know that some numbers aren't being accounted for.

    I think zero is the "best" tax rate. That way you can have 4-6 cottages and 15-16 barracks, and still have a high enough idle population to queue a reasonable # of troops.

    Obviously this requires two things.

    One, you obviously have to get all your resources by farming npcs (because you'll have no workforce).

    And Two, you have to have enough defenses and a large enough standing army (or alternatively massive amounts of food so anyone pillaging will get say 11mil food and 55k gold, leaving u with a million gold left) so that your heros don't leave you after you get pillaged and have 0 gold and negative income.
