Then you send in some waves, remember he's still online, about 10 seconds before the first wave hits, he opens his gate and all of a sudden his army pops up, fighting off yours, killing them.

He also could have had his troops in a valley nearby, he loses a lot of food there, but with 22mio he can hack that, attack wave comes in, just before you hit, his army is back at base.

Third option, he has got a lot of defending troops in his embassy, from his alliance. I'm not sure if they show up, but they defend nevertheless.
You really shouldn't give advice if you don't understand the game at all. First off, last I checked, you don't see Scouting waves incoming.

22 million is not alot of food.

If an alliance has troops in your city it shows up on scouting reports, assuming your scouting effort succeeded.

You can reinforce ALOT faster from 40+ miles, than you can attack from 11 miles. Especially since you sent transports. Probably took your attack an hour to land, but you could reinforce with archers from that distance in like 15 minutes.

Not sure I agree entirely with a couple points -

nbforrest - remember there are more factors involved besides just lvl 10 informatics. Most times, you having lvl 10 informatics just cancels each other out because your opponent more than likely has it too. Beacon tower levels and the intel stat on the hero plays more of a role when that happens. If you failed theres a reason, and its not just because its a bug.

joecool914 - If you are online, you can detect when scouting raids are happening by reviving your dead scouts. You cant defend against it, but you will get a report if your gate is open once the scouts die again. Once they die, just continue to revive them again. You can always "know" when someone is scouting you... granted you have to be online to revive them.

Also 40k-70k of archers can survive for while in a city with 22 mil food. Obviously more food is better, but in concept of this scenario with the pending attack it's plenty for the amount of time given. Even if you sent a huge batch of troops eating millions of food an hour, it would still last the night.
