Thread: Which is the better star wars movies?

Movies lately have become far too reliant on special effects. If they are special effects movies (i.e. the whole point of the movie is to showcase the CGI) like Transformers, then it can be successful.

However, movies that are story-driven, rather than effects-driven have come to rely on the effects as a crutch to cover the bad writing or bad acting (or both). The newer Star Wars movies are a great example of this. So is the new Terminator movie.

Some movies are story-driven and use impressive special effects to enhance or punctuate an already powerful story. These are some of the best sci fi movies ever made. The story is gripping and powerful and the special effects barrages come all at once at the culmination and climax of growing plot events. The best recent example of this is the new Star Trek movie. The writing and acting are phenomenal and true to the original while the amazing new things we can do with special effects just build and multiply the emotions and excitement of the story.

Some of the best things done in the sci fi genre have been done on television (although one was made into a movie). Two groundbreaking television series' redefined the genre and set the bar to a new level.

The first was Firefly, which had some of the best plot and character development of any sci fi show ever written, even though it lasted only part of 1 season. If you're a sci fi fan and somehow missed this one, buy the series on DVD. Its easily worth it.

The second was Battlestar Galactica. Like Firefly, it had impressive special effects at times, yet it was anything but reliant on them. Some of the best episodes featured no shooting or explosions whatsoever (and some of the best episodes had tons of both).

If you've seen these series' then you can't help but compare other scifi features to them, and not many compare favorably. The new Star Wars movies far fall short of the bar.

NO! The new Star Trek completely altered the Star Trek timeline, with all the plot, it said, F to the original, lets create our own history, and change the entire ST future, the typical science references were nice, but it failed to fit with the original timeline.

I agree with Dawnseeker. The new movies are all "Omg! EXPLOSIONS! Now we're blowing more stuff up! Now the building is falling into the lava! BUUUUURRNNNNNN!" while the originals were more like "Intensely palpable emotions! Character development! Plot twists! Triumph of good over evil!"

It's as if George Lucas took a several-year nap and was replaced with a 10 year old pyro.

We've got generations of people. And we've got generations of movies. Before CG there was animatronics, and claymation, and all that kind of stop motion effects. CG was just the next step. Granted it was a large one.

Do you really think the original Star Wars was much more fun to film? A lot of its space scenes was used to trick the audience in ways that CG can today.

To me, I didn't see the new Star Wars movies fall flat because of CG, I felt they did so because those movies were just filling the storyline (of the original three) and so served no twists, turns, or breath of own. If Lucas wasn't so trying to make sure everything was in correct line, it could've offered its own variants on being something that could truly stand by itself had 4, 5, 6 not existed.

But that's where I believe it fell short.

I will give you that one...but I still like the newer ones better . lol and the pyro in me takes insult at the remark by Anonymous I love all the fire and explosions in all of the newer movies. I especially liked in Star Trek how the sound went away in space. It was awesome Jsut like in real life (no sound in space)

Ahhh... the argument that Jar Jar ruined Episode One... I don't like the character either, as I don't see any need at all for silly slap-stick style comedy in the otherwise serious saga.

    HOWEVER...

What is absolutely VITAL to understand is the rather small role that Jar Jar Binks plays in Episode 2: Attack Of The Clones. Without Jar Jar... there would have been no clone army.

Sure, the clone army was still in existense, but if you will note in Ep. 2 when Amidala is no longer available to fight against the creation of the military, she leaves Jar Jar in charge as he's next in line as representatives of the planet of Naboo.... so, as we all know, Jar Jar makes what he believes is a "strong" decision, and calls for emergency powers to be given to the Chancellor, thus giving Palpatine that ability to create the GAR, which Amidala would NOT have done, obviously.

It is in THIS defining moment that we discover just how necessary Jar Jar Binks is the the Star Wars saga. Palpatine maneuvered Amidala out of the way by getting her to leave when the vote was coming up, out of so-called "fear for her safety", due to her being one of the strongest opponents to the creation of the military act. This of course, leaves the far weaker, and far more manipulatable Jar Jar in her place, which of course Palpatine needs in order to get the power he needs to start moving events towards his overall design to eliminate the Jedi and create what he sees as a truly peaceful, albeit subjugated, civilization, the Galactic Empire.

Without us meeting Jar Jar in Episode 1, and getting to see the character and how truly unfit he is in any kind of ranking capacity, we can understand how leaving him in charge of carrying the fight against the creation of the military is such a bad move for Amidala, and such a stroke of necessary genius for Palpatine, the ultimate spider pulling all the strings.
