As you point out and my understanding, there is no such thing as 'safe place' for your resources, my only recommendation is make your defenses as costly as possible for an invading army to plunder, after all it takes resources to train troops which they will lose after an attack.

But the whole point is to be resilient and make sure you have an alliance which will support you.
