I know it's not within the time period because he died in the 90's but I'd like to add Jacques-Yves Cousteau. A fantastic scientist and amazing frontiersman. I'm absolutely fascinated by the sea and with scuba diving and he did so much to pioneer the way in deep sea diving and research. RIP Jacques-Yves. You were amazing.
Erwin Rommel, the "Desert Fox"
He was arguably the greatest armored warfare commander in history, soundly defeating numerically superior forces, even with severe replacement and supply shortages due to Allied attacks on Italian transport ships. His forces rolled across most of North Africa, annihilating any British forces that tried to stop them. Much of their success can be attributed to his superb leadership, especially as he would ride in a command truck only a few hundred yards from the front, observing enemy movements and radioing orders to his tanks.
Although fighting for the Germans, he was not a Nazi, did not support Hitler, and was eventually executed for a minor role in Operation Valkyrie.
But I have 1 thing to say on that Solomon, the Allies had several opportunities to assassinate Hitler, but they canceled them as they decided his "mis"management of the war would end it sooner with him alive, as opposed to dead.
Since its before 1950, I'll get back to you for my person.
