At the time, a debate raged about who was the greatest explorer between the heroic Scott and the pragmatic Amunsend.

    Opinions?
    Leif Ericsson in my opinion.

ok so i KNOW i'm late and will probaly ignored (and rightly so if i am) but IF i remember correctly there were laws of condutc in war at that time in history. honor codes and such... so i can see that if "unfair" war tatics were used a defet may be called such

all important historical figures are larger than life these days. They lived thousands of years ago and can say with certainly what was true and what was part of their mystique? Tell us what your favorite anyways!

Arther. the Mythacal and ultamatly doomed optimist, who wanted to carve a channel for might to make it right. T.H.White has painted a picture of him i am so captivated by it hardly matters weather he was real or not, weather he lived as Legends say or difrently. a romantic at heart there are so meny aspects of THW's portrayel that hold onto the core of my soul. that he continued to love his wife and best friend even when he knew they were cheeting on him. that he continualy strove for the right of things. that he ultamatly sacraficed what he had for the betterment of his people. King Arther of Cammalot! the untouchabul myth of a man who tried his best and forgave unceesingly those he loved. even his son who wished him dead.

like i said. he's probably fictious, but that doesnt stop me loveing him

Pre 1950, well, its got to be..

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill KG, OM, CH, TD, FRS, PC (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British politician known chiefly for his leadership of the United Kingdom during World War II. He served as Prime Minister from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. A noted statesman and orator, Churchill was also an officer in the British Army, historian, writer, and artist. He is the only British Prime Minister who has ever received the Nobel Prize in Literature and the second person to be made an Honorary Citizen of the United States.

    Default Odysseus

To follow in Candlelite's footsteps I'm going to say my favorite historic figure who is likely fictitious or at least not all he's remember as- is Odysseus.

Odysseus was a warrior and soldier and not afraid of battle but the mark of this great man lies in his reputation for cunning. He used his intelligence and wit to win the day more often than simply drawing his sword. The man who invented the Trojan Horse deserves a lot of credit.

But the thing that truly excites me about this man is that he dared to challenge the gods. Yes, I realize that much of the point of the Odyssey is that he was being punished for doing so- but as a modern reader of this timeless epic I can't help but admire his tenacity. He dared to stand tall against the gods. He dared to fight the supernatural and lead his men home to Ithica.

Finally, as if that wasn't enough, the man was a romantic. He had to return home so he could once more be with his wife. He braved unimaginable hard ships and resisted the Siren's call just to get home to his beloved! Mwaaaa!

I have to agree, when it comes to people that were made into myths, Odysseus was one of the greatest. The fact that his myth still stands to this day is a testament to that.
