Disagree on this, just put in your politics hero. If you get attacked or scouted, Evony automatically assigns the hero with highest attack (whether it is your mayor or not) to defend.
I would say, save the long upgrades for when you sleep or go afk for long times.
Most important is your walls and wall defense, since valleys can be taken over by just a few archer (you don't even need to know whats there) informatics and beacon can be left aside for some time. I recommend starting with the walls and the defense on it, that will be what protects you when you're out of beginner protection, not beacon tower.
I go full out on the defense when i start (Meaning i start researching all relevant techs used in combat after i get the production research to a reasonable level), machinery doesn't do much, Military Science and Metal Casting helps you on building defense and having a good defense early in the game is the key to surviving.
Defense is number 1 priority. I don't know why you go for scouting operations first.
Politics hero is hardest to level up at start, so leave it at politics hero.
Follow quests, if you start building everything that's fast, you will run out of resources and it will take you more time to get them back compared to someone who follows the quests.
Defense should have been there already.
Engineering doesn't do much good if you don't have wall defense - it just takes a few more troops, and at only level 5 wall it's no use researching it because it doesn't take much to bring it down.
Those barracks should have been there already, you said you only upgraded the short upgrades. Then where's the barracks?
Uhm, i had 14 barracks to start with in beginner protection. All level 4 to make archers, one level 9 and while i was building ballistas in that single level 9 barrack, i was researching archery and HBR to an appropriate level while making scouts and archers in the other barracks. Meanwhile building archer towers and upgrading walls.
What defense?? Level 5 walls and no mention of wall defense?
That really doesn't make you good, that makes you lucky.
Noobs will, and they will succeed since your only protection was trying to be unscoutable. Trust me I've seen it before.
I skipped all the market parts, because the market depends on how old the server is. Don't try this on a new server because it wont work.
To come to a conclusion, your informatics, scouts and beacon tower didn't help you much since you never got scouted. I wouldn't give anyone resources who intends to go inactive for days.
I'd say you got lucky people left you alone, your alliance probably played a big part in that.
Now before responding, i don't mean to say your whole post sucks, you had some good points. I'm just telling my opinion on it.
