I don't believe there are any better tactics. If you are going for the max army approach, you can never leave your cities unattended. I've logged on in the Nick of time more than once, and too late on two occasions. With multiple cities, you're always under threat of a massive attack. One that takes what you've worked for.
With one city, you can still train big armies, enough to fight conventional if you wish. Even to the point of taking another city. However this opens you to that vulnerability I mentioned before. With my tactic, I can fight an entire alliance solo, even a top rated one, and lose fewer troops, and eventually win.
An example. I withstand the days of incessent attacks. Comfort with the food I have stored, turning on only food production at first, and then wood, and iron. In a few hours, I have enough to start building balls and transporters. Then I'm raiding barb cities, and building the rest of the big army, and hiring Heros to fight. That is if I want to fight conventionally. I'd probably train a few scouts and a handful of transporters and go back to taking and barbing valleys.
I'm in the game, and building the big army, and a threat to nearby towns, especially poorly defended ones. Now as long as you barb the worse town, you can even keep moving your base along your enemies cities, without the threat of a town taken while you are enjoying real life.
