The perception of tattoo's have changed quiet abit over the past 10 - 15 years. I have 11 tattoo's, 3 of which are visiable with a short sleeve shirt on. One on the webbing of my left thumb, one on my left wrist, and one on my right forearm. I work for a Fortune 500 company that has 600 billion US dollars in profits and there is plenty of people in my office that has tattoos. The main thing is, use common sense, dont go getting " F the world ! " on the side of your neck or your forehead ( Unless you plan on going into business for yourself then you can do what ever you want, lol ). And remember, its all about creativity and personal choice.

Wow where to start and what to say that's not been said already. A lot of people bring up valid points. It's okay for yourself personally not to like tattoos &/or piercings, but always remember the saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover."

With that said, I suppose I'll just enlighten you to the stories of my tattoos and piercings and hope in some way it helps you on your journey Miss Saraa.

My first tattoo and second tattoo are both on my back. As seen here:

(Edited for Evony approval of course)

My lower back tattoo was my first tattoo. About seven years ago when i was 19, I was in an extremely violent car accident. I had broken my right leg and my left arm was out of the socket (huzzah for dislocated shoulders -_-) amongst the whiplash. The gentleman behind me apparently didn't feel like stopping that day while I was on my way to class. Thanks buddy.... As I lie on the therapists table getting shock therapy for my back injuries, the woman helping me says, "Ya know, you're lucky you lived." She was right. If I close my eyes now, I can still picture the scene in slow mo as if I were still there. The only bonus from someone hitting you at mach ten? CASH MONIES! While sitting and re-cooperating from my injuries, I decided,"To hell with it, I'm getting my first tattoo." (Which I had been designing for years.) I did so not only to remind myself how precious life is, but that I shouldn't ever take a moment for granted. And so, I decided on three trinity symbols. Now, as some religions believe, that stands for three somethings. (I'll let you google that one.) And I felt I had a guardian angel that day, no contest. I also chose to weave ivy in and out of the symbols. (This was a new addition that was added to the symbols that I had been perfecting for years.) Ivy if often a symbolism of strength and bonding. For me, it just seemed quite fitting. And once I got the first one, I completely understood why people enjoyed tattoos. But we'll get to that in a moment...

My second tattoo on my back is between my shoulder blades. About the time I got this one, I had just ended an extremely awful relationship and was on a continuation of finding myself. Ladies, your early twenties are going to be rough. Don't ever push loving friends and family away. As I was in school, working two jobs, and dealing with two other feisty roommates, I had just dumped and completely 86'ed out of my life an abusive boyfriend. All of this in thanks to my supporting mother. Like the butterflies she adored in the spring time, she was always there hovering behind me showing me her love and faith in me. They always know when something is wrong, even if you don't tell them. And in the situation I was in, I didn't. But she was wonderful, ever supporting me along the way. My major in school was Music Education. I've grown up in a house where music was always played on either a piano, guitar, flute... and of course radio. And my mother had the patience to sit with me while I tried to figure out which instrument to play. ( I finally decided on "Voce") Hence, my second tattoo was born. A butterfly made entirely out of music symbols. For my mother.

Now on to my final tattoo:

Oh the dreaded foot tattoo. Aye chi wa wa did this one hurt. And a LOT! I won't go into another long drawn out story, but basically for the same reasons as my mother, I got one for my father. He's always been a strong, firm, and silently loving dad. Going into the Navy when he was young only so that my Grandparents wouldn't have to pay for his schooling, he's always had an amazing head on his shoulders and he's always been an amazing guiding light. Hence, a Nautical Star (remember me mentioning dad being a sailor?) and on my foot (him being a "guiding light.") He's so kick butt. You guys would love him.

Now, I've conservative parents as well. None of them have tattoos and only my mother has modestly pierced her ears. When I first got a tattoo... mom about poo'ed herself. Lifting up my shirt and a face that looks similar to this O_o she commandingly asked "What is that?!?" I sheepishly grin and turn to look her in the eyes but a bit too dumbfounded to respond still. About that time my dad walks into the kitchen too (hearing the commotion I'm sure he was curious.) She continues to ask in the same tone "Is that real?!?"

".... Yes." Not like I could lie about it by that point anyways.

Dad is still off getting a snack, but you know he's listening in.

Mom, "Does that mean it's.. permanent?!?!!!!"

"Yea.... " Expecting to be guided by the arm into the living room, I'm now scared of their punishment. 19 and still petrified of my mother's wrath... scratch that. I still am and I'm 26!

My dad turns and looks at the both of us, smiles and just says, "Just thank God she's not twins...."

Why this story? There's always a reason to laugh even if you don't agree with someone's actions. By my third tattoo, she even started saying they were cute.

My last advice would be this:

    1) Design your own to the best of your ability. Don't pick something out of a book verbatim. You don't know how many other people have the same thing walking around with it. Don't be afraid if you can't draw.... that's why you go to a tattoo ARTIST. They will clean things up for you and draw it in detail. Be sure to explain the meaning behind your tattoo that you will be getting and that will also help them. If you don't like their initial concept be sure to TELL THEM! This is YOUR body, not theirs. You're hiring THEM, not the other way around. (Also research the art you want to get. Spiderwebs in specific places on the body mean you have gone to jail, a tear drop can mean you've killed someone, etc etc.)

    2) Discuss proper places to get your art with your tattoo artist. Some tattoos may work better in an area than others. Decided on two potential places. This will help in the decision making process. (Also consider the job market. Yes, as unfortunate as it is a lot of places don't like to hire people with visible tattoos if they're going to representing the company to the public, clients, etc. etc. We are human, and it is human nature to see first, make an assumption, and then get to know the person. *shrugs* Make sure you want to deal with that.)

    3) Sleep on it for two weeks. Yes, two weeks. This is an adequate amount of time to make your final decisions. If you're still uncertain about anything in any step of the process... DO NOT GET THE TATTOO. You are not ready.

    4) Research your artist. Are they still learning? Are they award winning artists? Ask to see their portfolio. Do you like what you see? A good artist will charge you a decent amount of money, but won't over or under charge you. If they're well established and a credit to the field, they now how to keep you as a returning customer.

O_o Wow... Sorry about the long babble. But I'm passionate about tattoos. Now.... where's that "Piercings" thread....
