    Default Archers and Defense

I recently sent 150,000 archers to reinforce a city that was being attacked and they got wiped out buy a cavalry force half its size. My question is why?
I can see this happening if both forcese are fighting out in the open, but when the Archers are defending behind castle/fortress wall and the Cavalry is in the open shouldn't the Archers have the advantage then? Do they and at one point when the city is beat down enough its like fighting in the open? or is it a situation where the archers can only fight from archer towers?

The city had no traps or anything, so the defensive range bonus did not take effect. The attacking cavalry reached the archers in 1 turn, and cavalry have a 2x damage bonus against archers, so they were mostly wiped out, though I don't really understand the lack of losses on the cavalry side, their losses should have been a lot higher. Maybe they had higher tech, or the defending hero had low atk strength?

Not totally sure about this, but I believe it is just how the algos are set up. The defender does gets a bonus, but other then that it just reverts back to the basic range, speed and attack algos to determine the outcome.

So in other words it was like they lined up in an open field and went after each other. The Archers didn't have the advantage of hiding behind city walls

The walls only increase the range of defensive units by 5% per level of the wall (I guess ranged units only, not melees too, that I know of). If there are no traps or abatis or other defensive structures aside from towers, the fight just starts at the unmodified range of the longest range unit on the field. In this case it would be archers at 1200 feet. Cavalry travel 1500 feet per turn with HBR 10, enough to cross that distance in one turn. Though I still cannot explain why the cavalry's losses were so few, unless there is a huge technology gap between the two players. Even with no hero at all, 100k archers has enough firepower to kill about 20k cavalry per round with equal techs, and even if the tech difference was 0 to 10, it shouldn't be less than 13-14k killed the first round from the life and defense bonuses.

If your archers are participating then the gates are open. The cav simply rode inside the city and tore it up. The archers aren't shooting up and over the walls. The game isn't really accurate in this way.

    Hi,

I would look at basic stat.

Cavalry has 500HP and 250 ATT
Archer has 250 HP and 120 ATT.

Basicly, it would at least take 4 round for an archer to kill 1 Cavalry. As the cavalry reach the archer after 1 round (speed of at least 1250 :1000 + 5% * 5 * 1000 ), they kill their number in archer (35000 cav kill 35000 archer).

Adjust the numbers with tech, defence bonus for being defender, and all the unknown algo... you get a real mess.

Would have been better to rainbow a little bit here. Cav would have made a stop to kill Pikemen, swordmen, etc.

Hope it helps understand it all

no, it will not work that way. Cavalry will go straight to archers bypassing other units. The only way to stop them is to have some trap or abatis.
