Speaking from experience, ranked 4 on s10.

Easiest way at the start is to keep your town hall level down, keep your title at knight or civilan and the one city. Usually can hit 200k within the first week. Then just barb farm, leaveling your attack heroes. Sooner you have high attack heroes, sooner you can hit level 10 npcs.

Usually from there its easy as, mass produce troops, hit your level 10's to keep them alive and hit plenty of other players for more resources and to kill them off. Once your hero is 300 attack, its not hard to produce 400k archers a day.
