And I'm talking all genres in the Rock spectrum here. Let's widen the field as much as possible. REMEMBER!! I'm asking for personal opinions and, after a fashion I guess, tastes.
Personally, being a child of the late 60's and the 70's (I was born in 63), I pretty much grew up on what is nowadays called "classic rock" though I never can call it that myself.
A lot can be, and has already been, said about so many of those bands. As I just about at least like them all, this is a debate we used to have very often when I was a younger man.
But my personal choice has to be PINK FLOYD. Starting with the album MEDDLE all the way to THE FINAL CUT, all they did were masterpieces. Roger Waters was, and still is, a superb lyricist and conceptor (is that a word?) of this style of "Progressive/Art Rock". Some of his work reaches a degree of intensity unmatched by any other artist of the genre. I have somewhat outgrown the "angry young man" outlook of many of his work, still I cannot refrain from going back to them sometimes. And feel the same damned, sheer intensity wafting through me again.
Couple that with DAVID GILMOUR's guitar and that's it! I'm on the floor!! NO other guitarist has moved me as much as this man. As alway, when it comes to art, the experience is hard to describe. I can only say, in all honesty, that only one guitarist has ever made me weep by his play. His solo in TIME ( The Dark Side Of The Moon ) still gets to me.
RICHARD WRIGHT's piano and general keyboards work is absolutely masterful! Put on the album WISH YOU WERE HERE...I rest my case.
NICK MASON's percussion is perfectly adapted to this style. Often softer than the usual BANG-BANG of rock music, even understated at times, he elevates the drummer to the rank of artist.
You might be pardoned for thinking I'm a fan of these guys...
