I used to play a game called Shaiya, which was PvP based and the highest levels were in Ultimate Mode. Ultimate mode characters had a huge advantage over the next level down in hit points, spell points and also skills. The thing was Ultimate Mode characters could die and unless you had a special item with you, would be deleted.
That item was a store bought item. It was also available in the marketplace for sale by other players for ingame gold. Those players who sold these types of items were usually looking for enough gold to buy other items that would give them even more of an advantage in PvP. It was an ok game but it became pretty obvious that it was going to cost a lot more than I was prepared to pay to be anything like competitive at the highest levels.
Some Evony items are overpriced for what you get but really aren't necessary for most situations.
