Have been thinkin' about why this would reduce losses and it hit me that it's simply down to the fact that they're a seperate layer. It's the same reason you send 1 scout/sword/pike/cav/'phract rather than jus' 5 swords.
It's common knowledge that they'll stop an as a full group attack the one individual layers at a time; havin' 3,4k warriors means that they will attack them outright then move onto the archers.
Havin' warriors first will distract them for a turn, then workers afterwards will stop them for another turn (it's your rainbow effect in motion) while your archers backed by a ridicusouly stroong hero launch death waves onto them.
The odds are that few, if any warriors are even reachin' your archers and most of your casualties are comin' from the ATs...stallin' the warriors for an extra round is lettin' you kill them faster and get straight onto the ATs reducin' your death count.
