You should definitely read up on the Mayan Long Count calendar if you think that then. They created it with the sole intention to point towards December 21, 2012.

There is a scientifically proven galactic alignment that the Mayans were aware of around 3000 B.C. It involves the Earth at it`s Winter Solstice, the Sun, and the Galactic Equater all aligned perfectly.
