Confusing...
Darkbrady and Ulfhere, this is a good discussion, but it is possible to suggest an alternative explanation, that if there are traps/abatis then the scouts sit back and wait, otherwise they run in and attack? One of you attacked a valley (or a city without traps/abatis) while the other attacked an NPC (which would have traps/abatis)
Frankly I'm not HORRIBLY concerned about whether scouts work as layers or not, since I'd rather layer with other units.

If I help you, a +rep is appreciated, thanks!
This is a concernin' issue for me atm as it greatly affects pony attacks and brings their usefulness down several notches.
Aye, thas what I suggested on my last post...s'the only variable I can think of that fits right now. I'mma try redo my test later in a situation w/ trap/abati and see what I can get from it. The issue is that, as a few people have said, scout layers work effectively in NPC10 situations and they obviously have plenty of trap/abati...

Y'know..I've not denied that I cannae give any alternate explanation as to why these things are happenin'.
But I've also noticed that no one's even cared to mention my wee test even existed. Anyone care to try an explain? Jus' to remind you that I'm not jus' arguin' for the sake of arguin' I'll show you the reports and hopefully one of you will venture a guess or give me an explanation otherwise, 'cuz seriously...throwin' one, two, three and so on varyin' peices of evidence against me w/o even ackowledgin' my test existed is really startin' to wind me up.
Explain to me why that worked w/o givin' me more contrary reports. I'm willin' to accept alternate explanations and even accept that I'm wrong here. I'm not too happy to accept bein' ignored.

Second battle has 1k less archers so cav survive for 3 turns, then on the fourth turn the archers kill the scouts.
Brady, notice the 1k more Archers in the attack with less losses, which also happened to be the attack without the scouts.
If you want to prove this then send in a battle report with the scout side winning the fight with the scouts dying.

Baws! I never even noticed the extra 1k archers...she musta miscounted when sendin' troops in.
Again, I'm not tryin' to prove that my way is correct, I'm jus' wantin' somethin' that explains everythin'; so far there's plenty of things that make no sense if the scouts don't move.
Although redoin' the test is an interestin' idea. If the scouts do move, jus' kick it up to 10k cav and they'll beat the archers leavin' the scouts dead. If the scouts don't move there's no reason for even one of them to die. Right?
