Thas a classic example of a rainbow. Now I'm right back to square one....why do we have two contrastin' reports that show two things that cannot both be true...
Well the battle mechanics are known to work in strange ways. The only thing I can bring to the table is that Valley's and Player Cities work differently with layering.
All my tests have been against my gf's city (I'm such a terrible person to her x.x), not any valleys/NPCs.
Sayin' that, there's also numerous folk who've provided show of scouts workin' effectively against an NPC10...as well as show that they stay still against an NPC5. There's been nothin' to link them all as far as I can see...it does look...kinda random...
I don't think it's too productive to do any more tests on valleys until we know more, 'cuz valleys are rarely attacked and don't really need this applied anyways, whereas player cities and NPC10s could hold value for an explanation.

I use a scout layer when I attack NPC10s, but only becasue I've believed them to work in all situations before now. Have been doin' so today still, but out of habit as much as anythin' else.
It wasnae me that's shown results indicatin' that they work in NPC10s (and I forget for the life of me who it was), so I cannae post anythin' about that.

Scouts didn't charge up and get wtf pwnt by the warriors/ATs/etc.
Oddly enough, that was the lowest archer loss I've ever had. Could be due to a smaller amount of archers being sent.

No kiddin'...sub-5k casualties is pretty hard to find.
Anyhoo...it's lookin' like scouts sit back and arse-scratch until the end/all other troops are dead on valleys and NPCs...my results are on player cities so...
Wouldn't be the only thing in the game that changes between player cities and NPC/valleys.
Anyone wanna do a larger scale test on this against a player city?
