Usually the 'truth' in legends and folklore is related to the nature of ourselves and how we see the world, or how we should treat each other.

Again..chinese dragons are based on Komodos.

    Unicorns are based on horses.

    Rocs are based on Eagles.

Where did the Chimera come from initially?
Greecian Mythos. Belasarius (I cant remember his name) slayed it on while on the Pegasus and then flew to mount Olympus. But the gods wouldn't let him, so Pegasus bucked and threw him thousands of feet into the ground.

I believe that's part of it, since we are kinda twisting the truth to make up the legend and folklores. But I believe this to be another part of it, the way we see the world and the nature of ourselves, I think, has to do with how the story changes from the truth.

You misunderstand; I'm not askin' what the original myth of the creature was; I'm askin' how the myth was devised, and where it can be derived from in the natural, scientific world.

Back then they didnae jus' come up w/ stories for the sake of a bedtime read to the kids; all the stories were really believed; it was real to them. There wasnae some guy who jus' sat and decided on some monster that Belsariuos would slay the next day; there was a reason that the story says he slew a goat/dragon/snake/eagle thing...I'm wonderin' what that was based on.

this is true the myths we know and love were not just blogs about what ppl saw and did that day. they were indepth studies into the nature of our selfs and the world around us.

The earliest image of a chimera that I could find.

One thing I noted is that all the descriptions are of a female creature. Sorry I am not that familiar with Greek mythology. Funny how the images of creatures can change so much.

Chimera are i think an explanation myth. they belong to myths that explane things. why there is sea foam (said story) or what ever. they often symbloiaze great threats that come ontop of one another. fighting one battle is hard enough but to fight more then one at once... then try and boil it down into an intresting story to tell.
i love talking in metaphore so if i had sevral things going on in my life it would be very easy to conglomerate them together into one mythacal thing to fight, makeing my feeling of paril as great as it was apparent to my listeners
brady did you miss my expalnation of chimera?

Is it possible that somehow at some point there could have been knowledge of genetics and someone created a monster? After all, we really have no clue what a great deal of the lost knowledge was, we just assume that ancient cultures were primitive.

    Whats wrong with that possibility?

Because it is ridiculous, if you will pardon me.

To see the origin of the myth you have to understand Greecian story telling. A man would walk from city to city telling stories for money.

This man would make a story, and every telling he would make the monster more ferocious and dangerous. Eventually it gets to ridiculous, so it reverts to equilibrium. This equilibrium is the Chimera.
