They didn't. You hit the 100 round death mark.

A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon. ~Napoleon
They didn't. Your archer force was too weak to conquer the city (essentially, too weak to overcome the walls) so they hung around outside till they "starved to death" (end of battle).
Proof? Notice where it said that the fight lasted 100 rounds. The outcome is correct.
Unfortunately it is unintuitive and doesn't quite make sense. Imagine this conversation -
Bob : Hey John, that wall looks really high and there are only a few of us. We can't get through. Attack?
John : You bet. Charge!
Bob : Hey John, its been 50 rounds and we aren't doing much to this wall. Keep attacking?
John : You bet. Charge!
Bob : Hey John, its been 90 rounds and we are starting to run out of food. Retreat?
John : No way. Charge!
lol, love the convo. <3
100 round death mark????? Is it some type of Civony joke, a sarcastic remark or is that a glitch in the game that doesnt much sense.
No it is a proven part of the battle system. When a fight lasts more than 100 rounds, the attackers automatically lose and all their men die.
It's not part of the battle system, it's a bug. Wanna know how I know it's a bug? Because battles aren't meant to be stalemates. We have a non deterministic algorithm figuring out who wins and just croaks at 100 rounds. Not exactly elegant.
how exactly do you overcome the wall defenses? is there like a minimum amount of troops to do that?
I mean, when i send in thousands of archers and transporters...they just return with loots and didn't die after 100 rounds.
