    For shizzle.

The spam is staying at the current level of "Crap".

We are at spam alert level brown.

It will work when somebody clearly, concisely and definitely describes and defines "spam".

Define spam, huh? Let's try to do that. Group project....sort of like a field trip without the bagged lunch.

To start, I know what spam is NOT:
    1) A post that spawns or adds to an articulate discussion.
    2) A post that is meant to alert others to something that is of serious interest to them. Examples would be a message that a fellow forum member is ill and in the hospital, or that a tsunami wiped out Hawaii, etc.
    3) A game (but I am thinking we might need to do some preapproval on games these days.)

    What else?

What I'm really trying to say here is someone's spam is another's worthy discussion. So...

(Edit): Here's an example from TV. Take a show like The A Team. Worthless spam, right? And yet some people actually liked this show!!! I know this is so because I've seen it listed here, somewhere... If I can just find the link...

Some new posters may not be aware their post could be seen as spam. A week right off is a harsh punishment. I think that if the post is reported by enough people, the area mod should have a review section it's listed in where they can look it over and send a mail to the poster telling them that the next consequence would be a ban. I think a one or two day ban for the first offense after that is more reasonable, and if it happens again, give them a week, and if they still continue, ban their IP from the server.

Wildor, I understand, but I do think it would be a good idea to make a definition of what is considered spam here in OT. It's interesting that things that would be considered spam elsewhere are tolerated here. And even more interesting: the majority of the regulars in OT can agree on what is spam and what is not. So how are we making that judgment? Let's try to nail down what it is that makes us consider one thing spam but not another.

Okay FB. But bear in mind No One will Ever come up with a final definition of the term.

How many points does it take to get banned from this forum?
