I think you're right on the numbers but wrong on the conclusion. As was just said, it's not an either/or.

I have a list of over thirty level 5 NPCs near my city and I send farm teams to all of them, usually at least twice a day. It's a very nice source of income and, as you point out, incurs zero losses.

I also farm a bunch of level 10s -- using entirely different troops, so it truly is an AND rather than an OR. Not only is farming a 10 profitable, it also provides lots of experience which counteracts your point about lost training time. My heroes that just farm 5s are all under 200 attack, while my top hero is 337 attack and rising...slowly. If I wasn't farming level 10s aggressively I'd recruit new troops much more slowly than I do now, so I think there is a net gain in time through investment.
