After spending numerous hours in the first 4 days of play, I have discovered that the only way to advance with any efficiency is to spend real dollars. The conquering of the first available valley should be easier, or at least guided somewhat so a new player does not lose all of his or her troops. After three attempts to gain new land, I lost more than 90% of my workers, pikesmen, swordsmen, and archers, and began running low on gold and other resources. Making play for new players a bit easier might keep them engaged long enough to value the time invested in the game, time that may cause a player to be more willing to spend real money. The free play given at this point did not provide enough interest to keep me engaged to the point where I was willing to rebuild by spending cash on "game coins".
The game does have serious potential, but I'm not wasting any more time or money.
It was fun for the first three days, at least.
Bye bye, and have fun!
