I dunno. With neighbours like mine, floating alone in space for a few hundred years seems pretty tempting.

I view it as a man never being able to die, immortality as the gods of old. As that I would love it, attachments are what you make of them. For instance, friends come and go so do acquaintances. With that in mind I think as long as you don't constantly try to have a family your sanity would be fine.

As for a purpose, as someone detached from the short sightedness we all have as humans with limited time on this planet, your purpose could be to record history as it happens. This would give you a different view than anyone else. As someone who will be there until the end of time you would have a fuller scope of the universe and be able to see events for what they are and how they actually effect mankind.

With that in mind you would also be able to make additions to your observations of history and record the after effects. Such as, how a particular event shaped a nation or effected the world 20-50yrs after it happened. Or what particular events had unseen influence on mankind without anyone realizing it.

Also, you would be there when mankind expands their horizons beyond our own solar system. At some point you might just start to meet other civilizations on other planets. So no matter what happened to Earth in the future, you would always have a way of surviving and traveling. And if anyone ever saw the Highlander series of movies, you could literally learn every language and whatever you wanted. You could get a PHD in many different fields over time and become a god yourself in knowledge alone.

That actually perfectly describes the character Astinus from the Dragonlance Saga. I think that would actually be one of the few ways to remain sane; although, if you live for all eternity, one might want to consider going insane. At least you would be happy for the rest of eternity.

So what will you do when they call your name and you're not ready to go?
Everyone will stare at you and tell you what you know
That you're in too deep and you can't quite keep your secrets, one and all
We might just make it after all, on our own

like rodri said, it could be really cool or really sucky. if i wasn't going to grow older, and were in the physical age you became immortal in, and if i could also have at least a few of the people i'm closest to become immortal, then i would probably want to be immortal. also like somebody else said (i don't remember who) i would want to be able to end my life if i wanted to do so, were i immortal.

No. I wouldn't want to be immortal/live forever.

Depending on how you look at it however, immortal can be two ways.

Immortal as in actually living forever.
Or Immortal as in living in history (or some written historical text) or in the hearts of those who knew you for doing something great.

I believe there is a beginning and an end to everything. What will you do when you've been everywhere, done everything, seen everything, felt everything, accomplished everything, etc.

There is a deep philosophical unimaginable thought process to the whole idea, it far transcends anything we know or believe in.

It is only a figment of our thought.

For a long time now, I have felt a peaceful, embracing warmth of a thought....

Peace. To be laid in the ground, to be covered from sight, to finally and forever be at rest. Rest so re****l you don't even know you are resting.

Maybe to die is to be immortal.

umm don't make me spray you with RAID!

Being immortal would be horrible, I do believe 1 lifetime of dealing with rampant stupidity should be more than enough for anyone...

    thanks Ashley39 for the sig!

If we are to believe some scientist about the big bang, I think it said somewhere (on a program on discovery) that the world will crash back together to create that single atom in which the world began.
my point is that if you are immortal you would be able to live up to that point where our world will end. If we are to believe that immortality means, that you don't die. Then i wonder what will happen to an immortal person at worlds end? will he die with the end of our universe? or will he live out a new life in a new world?

    Opinions? Thoughts?

If you have eternity, you might as well go insane, then go sane, then go insane again, over and over and over. It would help to pass the time.

I'm not immortal but it helps me pass the time, especially on a boring Sunday afternoon.
