Thread: Yet another thread about point(lessness?) of swordsmen (& others)

Default Yet another thread about point(lessness?) of swordsmen (& others)

I've read a thread or two about what swords are for, but came away more confused than I started. Do they have a good use?

Initially in the game I was told just warriors and archers had a purpose. Then I learned that ballistas are good for npc farming and scouts are essential. Then that cavalry are good for lowering loyalty. Pikemen are good for cavalry/cataphract. But what are swords good for?

And as a side note, I'm not convinced anymore that warriors are good for anything other than quick mass production. And I'm not clear on how to use rams best.

It seems that finding a definitive answer to these questions is very hard, since the battle algorithms in evony are quite arbitrary, far from transparent and not particularly realistic. Are there any good guides on this?

    Cheers

Well couple things here one those rams are good in high numbers as defense against other siege later on but that is a strategic choice, Next Swordies replace warriors later on as you can afford them and their defense against archers is very good in high numbers, I would suggest you use time to research layered attacks and range to better know what troops tou use against others this reasearch time you spend will reward you with knowing how to best combine your forces as well as what you need to train at your barracks hope this helps

From my experiences, where warriors fit the "zerg rush" tactic of being thousands of weak units overrunning enemies, swordsman tend to be the "tank" unit that soaks damage for the units behind them.
    It's all Rodri's fault.

This is the key to understanding layering and the proper use of swordsmen and pikes. They have a slightly higher speed than archers which means they will enter the battle ahead of archers, giving a shield to your archers to allow them to move up unharmed.

You can read DarkBrady's Guide to Key Issues of Combat Mechanics for a more detailed discussion of the uses of different units.

    I less-than-three the Zergz.

Anywho, I've noticed after a while of playing that, even though my swordsmen keep my archers alive, the swords themselves get powninated by pretty much anything else that attacks them. Heck, my 2k swords couldn't stand up to 3k warriors. 'Tis a sad fate.

If your enemies aren't good at layering, swords can take out mechanic units reasonably fast. I sent 250 ballistas and 100 transports against a valley, and the 200 swords there wiped everything out. no big lose at the time, but thats when i found out what they could best be used for.

The five things you'd need for a good defence, in order of importance (in my opinion, at least):
    Archers
    swords/pikes
    ATs
    5k range
    layers

I count swords/pikes as a seperate thing from layers of 1k warriors and 1k workers because...frankly, they're better.
I have more swordsmen than I have archers, and as many pikes as archers...but then my layers of warriors, workers and the rest are about a quarter of my archers numbers.

The swords/pikes are basically jus' super-warriors...stronger, tougher and faster. The speed puts them far out in the battle quickly, to keep them away from your archers and ATs for longer, while dealin' significant damage. The warriors and workers jus' die while savin' a turn or two...but the swords/pikes will cause a lot of damage. And in my case, they won't get past the swords anyway unless they've got a pretty scary army.

Swords are awesome, I use them all the time, as they stay alive when the cheaper units get massacred. What I can't figure out is how to use cavalry without getting them slaughtered. I'm really not a fan of the suicide-style "zerg rush" technique, I prefer to keep my soldiers alive and not spend gobs of resources rebuilding them after every battle. Yes, the cheap units work, but you need thousands of them. :-p
