Okay, the drop rate seems to be something less than 1%. I'm guessing it is .25% or .5%.
Here is where you find the medals. This seems to be pretty accurate. I stole his from one of the posts in the library.
1) Cross - Level 1-4 Valleys
2) Rose - Level 1-4 Valleys
3) Lion - Level 1-7 | Level 1-3 NPCs
4) Honor - Level 1-4 NPCs
5) Courage - Level 1-5 NPCs
6) Freedom - Level 4-5 NPCs
7) Wisdom - Level 5+ NPCs
8) Justice/Nation - Level 10 NPCs
Factors that affect getting a medal:
As far as I can tell, these factors increase the likelihood of getting a medal:
1. Weakness of your army. The weaker the better. I use only warriors or warriors and 1 of each other type except cataphracts.
2. Number of soldiers you lose. You want to lose as many as possible.
3. Level of your hero. You want your hero to be as low level as possible.
Recommendation
Here is what I recommend that you do. I set this up for valley levels 1 though 4 because they are easier because you don't have to deal with archers or cavalry. To apply these instructions to valleys above level 4 just add 1 to the level numbers. You always want whatever you have to be 1 level above the valley you are attacking. You may want to adjust this slightly to deal with archers. You might add some cavalry to the warriors, but dont go crazy with this or you won't get any medals because your army will be too strong. Better to lose more warriors.
1. Do NOT upgrade rank before title. You can usually upgrade the title first. Upgrade the title as much as you can before you have to upgrade the rank. You need to save your medals/gold for the title which is what lets you build more cities.
2. Do NOT give medals to heroes until you have attained the highest rank/title you wish to attain. You will kick yourself that you gave away those precious medals.
3. You will have to attack a lot of valleys or the same valleys many, many times so you need to have lots of heros, so do this for each city you own:
A. Upgrade your rally spot to level 10 if you can, level 9 if you don't have the script for level 10.
B. Upgrade your feasting hall to level 9.
C. Do NOT upgrade the inn and if you have already upgraded the inn, tear down all the levels until you are at level 1. Use the tear down one level at a time feature.
D. Recruit 8 low level heroes. If you get a hero that is above level 1, release it and keep going. You want level 1 heroes. Level 2 or 3 is not too bad, but level 1 is best.
E. Research your military techs to level 5. Don't worry about archery, we will not be using archers for this.
F. Research informatics to level 5.
G. Upgrade your beacon tower to level 5.
H. Decide on a valley attack strategy. You can either use catch and release or you can plunder unowned valleys.
i. Catch and release. You abandon a few of your valleys and then you attack a valley, then abandon it, then attack it, then abandon it, etc. You can set this up all at once in the rally spot by setting up each hero to attack the valley with a camp of 1 minute more than the previous hero. So, the first hero has a camp of 0, the second hero has a camp of 1, the third hero has a camp of 2, etc. Or you can just count to 10 or 15 or 20 as you set up the attacks to put a few seconds between them.
As soon as an attack hits you abandon the valley so that the next attack captures it. This way you can attack a valley 8 times in a couple of minutes.
Note, catch and release does not give you any plunder.
ii. Plunder, conquer the same number of valleys as your town hall center and then attack all the valleys of the level you want within some reasonable range. Then wait for them to regenerate troops and attack them again.
I. Scout - you must scout each valley first in order to determine the army size, proper army size is critical.
J. Army size - you want to use warriors for your army. The reason is that the formula looks at the strength of your army and the number of troops you lose in determining if you get a medal. So, you want the weakest army you can use that will win the battle and you want to lose as many troops as possble. I know, sounds stupid, but I am sure it works this way. So, here is the formula I use. I total up the number of troops the defenders have, then I send that many warriors. If archers are present I send a few of every other troop type also except cataphracts. DO NOT send any cataphracts, they cause the strength of your army to increase too much.
Since you have higher military techs than the defender the warriors usually win the battle, if you lose the battle just increase the number of warriors by 20% and try again. Keep doing that till you win. Keep records of these battles so you can kind of tell by the size of the defenders how many warriors to send. Do NOT greatly increase the army size so that you lose fewer troops. What you want is for the defender to lose all of his troops and you lose almost all of yours and a few stragglers come wandering back to your city.
K. Attack - use either the catch and release or plunder strategy as explained above. I have had much better luck with the plunder strategy. Make sure that every hero you have is always either attacking or returning from an attack. I just attack every unowned valley within about 25 miles and then restart at the beginnning of the list. This seems to be enough time to regenerate the troops.
