this is getting a bit off the path here...
    I'm asking:
"Is it okay to expel a suspected spy without any questioning, hinting, whatsoever, even if the spy has pitched in on many occasions and helped the alliance as a whole grow?"

It depends on your definition of "ok".
Given the choice, most people would rather lose one member than risk spies.
It's unfair if you've pitched in and helped, but you gotta understand where they're comin' from.
You could definitely try and prove your innocence, but that won't be easy by far.

At the end of the day, they're the leader so it's pretty much their choice.

    Yeah, true.
That's the flaw of the alliance system- susceptibility to abuse.
But, the better punishment would be to force them to stay, warn everyone about them in a group mail, and not offer any info. That way, they have time to prove their innocence (I personally prefer this) + they lose 10% prestige if they ARE a spy and decide to quit to get away from the prosecution.

Have seen a number of large alliances destroy themselves because they think their is a spy in there midst. Instead of just getting on with the game the fighting turns inward. They kick out 5-6 people each day. Next thing you know there is only 20 -30 of them left, another alliance comes along and wipes them out. Its not the spies that caused this its the witchhunts.

    Not good.

I'd rather feed spies misinformation than have witchhunts.

    ^exactly my point.
Plus, it gets boring with only 20 people in the alliance.

your thoughts assume that the person is a spy.
that is not true in most cases.

and if you're afraid of the risk, remember:

in the cases Ive kicked people ive done so when the evidence is not deniable. I might ask a couple of questions but nothing as direct as to if someone is a spy.

Misinformation is a great tool. so is telling everyone a different story and seeing which one comes back to you. its kinda hard to deny your a spy if your the only one who was told a piece of info and now the enemy is blabbing about it you.

I'd rather do what some people here have suggested, and give false information to the accused.
