wich version of the story do you know?
Do you know the original version with it shady heroes, misunderstood villains, and moral lessons?
Or
Do you know the cheesy sugar coated versions with good and bad delineated in black and white, and a happy ending for everyone but the obviously evil villain.
Did you know that originally "villain" meant villager??
Did you know that The Little Mermaid does not get her man?
Did you know that Disney’s Aladdin and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame are both complete destructions of classic literature that only took some minor characters and most of a setting and then wrote their own story?
what is happening today that we can’t give our kids good moral stories with tragic endings? every time my son watches Hercules i want to yell at the "muses" the narrator starts out great and then a "muse" interrupts with "will you listen to him?" "his making it out to be some Greek tragedy" and i want to yell "IT IS A GREEK TRAGITY!!!!!" the bast ard son of a god is plagued by a jealous hera and every time he gets his life in order she has him mess it up until he kills himself in despair, after killing his wife and child.
i even heard talk of someone "redoing" Romeo and Juliet so that they get the happy ending they deserve.
is anyone else angered by our need to give every story a happy ending???? what does this do to the kids who won’t know that not every hero wins? how will they feel about them selves when tragedy strikes?
i am positive that we are setting them up to live lives full of disappointment and despair. crying "no fair" at every turn.
that’s what made the old tales great they taught you that life isn’t fair and only those who are able to accept that and work with what life throws at them will succeed.
