Thread: Have you ever...

  1. #1

    Default Have you ever...

Suffered through a multi-hour meeting, a horrible movie, or a horrible class, and thought to yourself "Well, there goes 3 hours of my life I'll never get back?"

Was your next impulse then, perhaps, to want to punish whatever power it was that tricked you into spending your most valuable asset--your time---by pummeling their face in?

Take "3-hours" and multiply by a factor of multiple hundreds (aka "the time I've spent playing this game"), and I become nauseous at the thought of how much of my life that Civony has taken from me that I will never get back. It is a game with a lot of 'potential' perhaps, but lets face it ladies (yeah right!!) and gentlemen, this game is complete garbage.

We all know it, we all see it....so WHY do we keep playing it? I'll tell you why....because we have spent so much !@#@$ time on it that we don't want quit.

There is nothing exciting about this game, nothing that it really does well and tons of things it does HORRIBLY!! But holy $%^& have we spent so much time on it. For those who are like me, I heed you this advice:

    1. Look up the business term 'Sunk Cost' and see how it might apply to your situation with this game

    2. "Free-Forever"---BULLPUCKY!! Even if you don't spend dollars. Your time is not only valuable and worth money, it is your most valuable asset you have.......why spend it on something you no longer enjoy.

    3. If you have spent any real world money on this game, realize that their are those of us with mixed emotions in regards to you: We don't know if we should feel sorry for you or just scream ROTFLMAO!!!!!!

Anyways, just words of wisdom from a guy whose found the idea of trolling thse forums more interesting than actually playing this &^%$ game.

I started playing this game on day two. I play part time and for free. I still enjoy it.

perhaps it is that I never had great expectations, just wanted to kill an hour a day or so. I spend more than that some days, but it is my choice. I understand why you do not enjoy the game. it is your choice. trying to convince other players not to play the game may be a further waste of your time, it is their choice.

I guess if they cannot figure out what they want to do with their time without help, you may be aiding them.

    meh, whatever.

well, I suspect, and it has been stated elsewhere, that Evony is just a big psychological experiment. I'm sure that addiction response is already factored into the project...I'd write more, but it is time for me to start my next construction project on server 1...

How'd the line go from that Smashing Pumkin song?

"Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage".

Into the night I go, memory a thorn of sorrow, onward toward death.

personally, i like seting stuff up and watching it go, and that is exactly what this game does.

The game is very much a time-sink, I'll agree with that much of the original post.

However, I have spent the past two decades "sinking" my time into games such as Populous, Age of Empires, Railroad Tycoon, Tropico, and other such FREE "build a world" gaming ventures. On the "pay as you go" side, I also play Gemstone IV (for over 15 years) and Everquest (a 10 year veteran of that horrific addiction).

If you're cursed with an abundance of rapid boredom (which some people like to self-diagnose as ADD), it's probably not the game for you.

The biggest draw, IMO, is that it is free. Second, I'm not forced to join a group of players to advance my character (i.e., Everquest), or spend hours waiting on a battle to start so I can die a dozen times (again, Everquest), or worry myself to death over the status of my gear and whether or not I compare to other players the same level as I am (and yet again, Everquest).

One of the bigger appeals of Evony to me is that there is a challenge in seeing how advanced I can become (resources, gold, prestige, etc.). It's like an endless puzzle.

Drawbacks? Other than the time, none that I can tell, based on the game mechanics themselves and the apparent intent of gameplay.

But if you do plan to sink yourself into it, find another hobby to go along with it. You'll spend plenty of time waiting on construction or research to complete, or resources to be gathered. (I usually either play another game simultaneously, read a book, or do online research.)

It's a time killer, and if you have time to kill, that's a good thing.
