Might I add something that could also increase your chances of dropping medals?

Medals are also determined by how close a battle is to losing. I've noticed that if you send some suicide warriors/pikes in with your archers, it will also increase your chances of getting medals. I'm not much of a valley hunter, so could you test this out on your server as well Docwho? A mere 1k warriors each wave might prove a difference.
