Actually, it's quite true. I'm a born and raised Californian and I couldn't agree more that this an practically an annual event. My Aunt's home was destroyed once. Quite terrifying, but very true.

I lived in California for a while and I'll agree with this. We had a brush fire up to the edge of the backyard once. You can't live in the midst of chaparral, which is the name of the native shrubs and grasses, and not get this. The plant life there is actually designed by nature to burn periodically. Some of them only spread seeds when burned.
The remaining 364 days that don't suck?
