At the time pirates abounded in the caribbean, "repeating rifles" and "revolvers" hadn't been invented. They had guns, but they had to stop and reload the thing after each shot, so they didn't have epic gun battles. But yes, they had guns.
Modern day pirates have guns for sure...big bad nasty ones.
I'd like to point out, though:
Pirates<Pirates w/guns<Modern Pirates w/big guns<US Military Snipers
US Military Snipers=hidden death=ninja
Therefore:
Pirates<Ninjas
