Ken, I think the problem here is that the logic you are working with is fundamentally different.

You logic is- can't win the battle, don't want to lose troops = close gates

My logic is- can't win the battle, gonna lose troops either way = open gates

A lot of the time the attacker will reduce your city's loyalty to 0 and wipe out the troops, whether they are able to take it or not. When they do this, it wipes out all the troops.

If you pay attention to one part of this post, pay attention to this one: Whether you open gates or close gates, it is still possible to lose your army, if you are offline!

which renders your argument about building back up useless, as you could potentially have your army reduced to nothing.

If you pay attention to one other part of this post, pay attention to this one: In the OP you specified that this was a guide for "what to do in a WAR SITUATION". In a war situation, your enemy will kill all your defenses and troops just for the sake of it. Closing your gates is only any good for protecting your army if you're being farmed, NOT if you're at war.
