"Give your members some tasks to do such as finding more recruits in their own vicinity. Give your officers and leaders some responsibilities and allow them to take control when you are not online."
"Don't tolerate members who are abusive to other members.
Don't tolerate drama queens.
Don't tolerate the continual beggars.
Don't try to do everything yourself, learn how to delegate.
Don't be afraid to admit that you don't know something.
Don't undermine your trusted officers.
Most important, don't take it all too seriously, it's only a game after all."
Thank you, Rodri! This whole thread has been very helpful, but the items above were the most helpful so far.
I just started playing 11/01/09, and was so happy to be in a great alliance with a great host (& officers), we were ranked 8th on 91 at one point! Then all of a sudden, after a bunch of "good" players jumped ship to other shores for unknown reasons, she left without a word ~ with the vice host! So today we are down to 69 members, and there's only a couple of us who've stepped up to keep things together. Luckily, I am a "nerd" who just loves to learn new things by doing tons of research, so I've been learning a lot since day one (only reason i'm doing as good as i am so far, plus a little luck in where i've landed!).
I was thinking of copying some of my favorite wiki/bbs/hods links and sending them to members as a morale builder (can you email a document attachment somehow?), and also hang out on world chat trying to snag replacement members, but what else do you all think I should do in this particular situation? Also, I happen to have a Ritual of Pact, but that won't do me any good now because we've already been up to 100 members, right? (stupid item with no use - sheesh!)
Thanks for this post, ColGiz, it's very timely for me! And thanks in advance for any help you all can offer.
Cheers!
