even the definition of the term game has ethics, that is why games have rules
I think the word ethics can only be very loosely used here. Ethics and morals have this connotation of something good, but when it comes to a game, what's good online isn't always going to be conventionally good in real life. Look at all those games that let you pick an evil alignment or play as a thief, a necromancer, etc.

Putting aside all the good/bad connotations, the basic "ethics" of a game are firstly going to be defined by the game's built-in constraints. So if ganking, spying, ganging up, constant attacking etc are allowed by the software code, then they are "ethical".

"Ethics" will be secondarily defined by the rules put in place by the admin. So when the admin says that botting, flaming, spamming etc are illegal, they become "unethical" by definition.

The third definition of "ethics" in a game is going to come from the players, which is where I think a lot of people are getting hang-ups. When what a player views as "ethical" clashes with the first or second definitions, that's when you get people complaining that they are being harassed by bigger players, constant attacks, etc, and it's ALSO when you get people complaining that there is nothing wrong with them botting to feed their armies. Along with the reverse viewpoints and the whole debate.

Whether you think ethics have a place on Evony or not is going to depend on how well your own definition reconciles with the definitions imposed by the code and the admin. The debate will be stuck at player level until the Evony devs step in and change something in the first two definitions. This is just my point of view as someone who's actually worked on developing other games and enforcing the rules on some of them. I vote other.

Personally, I don't like using deception, but imagine how boring the game would be if no one did?

i believe being nice is needed but it is a war game....really....

player: "why did you scout me"
me: "because im going to attack you"
    player: "why?"
me: "because its the point of this game lol"

i think of games like real sports.

there are players who grab their opponents' pony tails, who slide with their cleats up, put pressure on the groin when they grapple, etc.

if you're that kind of player, that's why there are rules for if you get caught.

a lot of people have a higher sense of ethics that transcends a particular game. it doesn't make you a better game player, but that's not really the point.

a definition is just that, what it is ...
you and I can't take a word and re define what it means
that's like saying 2+2=5 because i say so

the question isnt about morals and values its about ethics

The options are only similar in the yes or no part.
All of the reasons are the "excuses" I could think up of for voting one specific thing.

Yes, I know this is a war game, but, I'm just restating some arguments that, to me, appear popular or well-known.

You know, now that I think about it, if everyone played ethically, wouldn't it just be boring? Just conventional warfare doesn't really work.

Nice technical definiton, P. But, you have to remember, the game code isn't the constitution. The programmers only worked to make a game, not a set of rules.

I think just the general mechanics of how evony works in wartime excludes it from being a morally correct game.

On one hand there's the fact that the only way to really attack someone succesfully (unless they are weaker than you/a bit stupid) is when they are asleep (or just generally offline)

And then there's the very fact that you can do this in the first place.. all it means is that no-one dares be away from the game for a prologued period of time unless their account is being watched by a friend, or they quit. Yes there's Holiday Mode now but let's not even start on that.....

I personally intend to quit soon. Playing this game is literally like a full time job.. and what I really need at the moment is an actual full time job, not some silly demanding game that just eats too much time..

'Fact is, all of these tricksy things (espionage, betrayal et cetera) are all used in real life war too, in modern day and throughout history, includin' the period that this game is historically based off of.
Why should we all be polite and kind to each other when humans weren't when it actually happened?

And even so...why should we be polite and kind to each other? It's a game. Games are meant for relaxin' and doin' things you cannae do in real life, not for showin' your moral superiority. If anyone's ever played a consol game where you shoot, kill or otherwise injure other creatures, zombies, ninjas or people, then you've already broken every ethical code as far as games go...why shoudl you be nice here? Because it's real people?
Look at CounterStrike...Gears of War...Halo...any and all other games like this...notice that everyone runs around shootin' the crap outta each other?

You don't get Marcus walkin' up to a Locust and revvin' his lancer and goin' "Rrraaaagggg--...Hold up there, mate you look pretty beaten down. Need me to give you a hand back to your big slavverin' brumaks? I'm sure they'll appreciate it; maybe we can keep in touch, grab dinner sometime /ride into the sunset"

This game includes Diplomacy and Warfare. Wars are good every once and a while, but it's stupid for one arrogant alliance to declare war on every other alliance there is. I don't care about spies really, it just shows how unsure and weak an alliance is.

This is my take on the topic.
