Default No Reasonable way to make gold

I have over 500k of each resource and 2 maxed out cities and like 1k gold. Resources don't sell for jack on my server. The economy (if you can call it that) of this game is horrendously broken. People are just hoarding resources and the price just keeps getting lower. I'm stuck progressing because I can't get any gold. I can't afford to employ hero's so that I can take flats. (Not that attacking flats yielded anything other than food anyways)

This game needed a lot more balancing and beta testing imho.

Build cottages and population and tax em. Even under newbie protection im making 5K an hour gold. and then once its off ya can plunder low level barb villages for 20-50K

i dont know why you have such a hard time making gold....maybe you're doing something wrong?

Build a city to be a gold farm, and you'll have all the gold you'll ever need.

Possibly he doesn't know to up his tax rate, especially when offline? Tax rate of 50% when offline and cottages (ie population limit) over and above production requirements is the way to do it.

Of course the top players who have finished all their researches will soon end up with loads of gold and not much to do with it....

I think they also start shipping it off to junior alliance members under beginner protection who can't be plundered and actually need it... call it an investment in goodwill.

To the OP, tax revenue comes from population. Villages and loyalty set the population. (Tax rate is self explanatory, but it does decrease loyalty...) And the returns to upgrading city are not linear... 1 level 6 village will generate more than 6 level 1 cities... so you'll have to get your town hall and your villages upgrades to see more revenue. AND - very important - get a hero with high politics (other attributes don't matter here) - and appoint him/er as mayor. Also, if you have a Wealth of Nations item (I think everyone gets it n the beginner package), its a good time to use it during the first 7 days if you are cash strapped.
