It's all about power.
Power brings security for you and those near you. Power provides adequate living resources. Power assures territory. Human beings seek power to assure survival. It's a biological drive, and it filters down in so many ways. Women naturally are attracted to powerful men, probably as a way to ensure their offspring will be provided for. Children assert authority over other children to ensure they get the best attention, food, position, etc.
Other posters have called it dominance, but it boils down the same. It's not just this abstract, obscure drive we humans have. There is a sound biological reason for these urges. Humans will always have conflict.
It would be nice if humans could find ways to handle conflict without resorting to physical violence and war, but there is an intelligence issue at play as well. (Here goes....yes, flame me if you will....) I believe that wars are started for the same reason that domestic abuse tends to occur and most fistfights begin. When a human cannot win a conflict with his brain, he resorts to his fists. When a better weapon is handy, he'll use that as well. Yes, I said "he" because men are more driven to this sort of behaviour than women. But in essence, it all comes from two guys fighting for the same thing, and one is going to win because he's smarter, so the other fires up the weaponry.
