Saint Nicholas was in fact a real person (not actually a Saint though, just good natured. Calling him a Saint was an attempt to more deeply root Christmas towards Christianity when they chose the icon.), and he gave presents out to ALL children (handmade by HIMSELF) who couldn't afford it within his town.

A toymaker who had no disposition towards naughty or nice children. And I do believe he left them on the doorstep, as opposed to breaking in.
