I vote Patton without a doubt. There's been some amazing generals, here in the US and in other countries, but he is one of my favorites. Perhaps he was not the easiest person to get along with on a personal level (word is that he gave all his aides and the other command staff absolute fits) but he was a military genius. Had he been allowed to override Montgomery's wishes and charge for Berlin and then continue on to Moscow, we'd have grown up in a vastly different world. Politically would it have been wise? Who knows? But from a military standpoint, he would have put the US firmly in the position of "World's ONLY Superpower" and held us there.
One of the greatest shames ever is that he died in a simple traffic accident in Berlin after the war.
